Fire Protection for you real estate investment and family
I know that fire safety is not cool and hip like the newest ipod phone but if your home has a fire what would you do? Do you have a plan? Could you get out in time? What if a fire starts in your home? Did you know that you have ONE MINUTE to get out. Yes, I really said ONE MINUTE! It's a grim statistic: 5,000 people die annually from fires and 80% of these deaths occur in the home. Over 1,000 homes, 280 apartments and 1,000 vehicles are destroyed daily by fires. Fire is also one of the leading causes of death for children. This occurs because the majority of people are not properly prepared to deal with a home fire.
FACT: most people who die in a fire, succumb to smoke inhalation – not the flames. There is a fire death every 162 minutes and a fire related injury every 32 minutes. Home fires caused 80% of civilian fire deaths. Don’t let this happen to you and your family. There are many ways you can protect your valuable real estate investment but more importantly PROTECT YOUR FAMILY. • Escape Plan – create and practice a fire drill every six months. Draw a floor plan of your house and make sure elderly and small children understand it.
• Smoke alarms are crucial – Make sure a new battery is placed in all alarms every six months. Install a smoke alarm in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
• Choose a central meeting place outside in neighbors driveway. This will allow firefighters access to your home and ensures that all members of your family can be accounted for.
• Keep doors closed at night while sleeping. This will create a barrier from smoke and heat.
• Family members with mobility limitations need to have another family member assigned to them for assistance.
• Provide a ladder for each second story bedroom in case someone gets trapped by smoke and fire.
• If smoke or fire prevents you from exiting safely close all doors between you and the fire. Use duct tape and towels to seal the door cracks. Open windows for fresh air and keep a flash light in every bedroom for firefighters to see you or your family in each room. Cooking fires are the #1 cause of home fires and fire injury. 40% of all reported home fires are due to cooking accidents. 59% of reported home cooking fires occurred when victims tried to fight the fire themselves. During the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, is a peak day for cooking fires. These tips will help you protect your real estate investment and your family. Until next time my friends.
